Are you ready to get blown away by a brilliant vocal performance? A sweet, sweet musical pleasure is coming to Riga pretty soon. On April 7th Mariah Carey is going to perform in Arena Riga within her “The Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour”.
Mariah Carey is famous American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. She has sold around 160 million albums worldwide and, according to Recording Industry Association of America, is the third best-selling female artist of all time.
Until her show in Riga, let`s get to know her – here are “Top 5 things you may or may not know about Mariah Carey.”
- Mariah`s voice
Typically the average vocal range for both male and female singers is about two octaves. Guess what? Mariah Carey`s voice has a five-octave vocal range. On her shows she sings her song “Sweetheart”, which hits F2 – that is the lowest end, and later she goes on with her track “Emotions” and hits her highest recorded note.
Her speaking voice is much lower, which explains how she can reach those low notes.
- #1 hits on Billboard
Mariah has had 18 No.1 hits on Billboard`s Hot 100 charts. This makes her the solo artist with the most number one hits and second only to the Beatles overall. Mariah first topped the US pop singles chart in 1990 with “Vision of love”. It stayed at the top of the charts for four weeks and was nominated for four Grammy Awards including “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year”.
The song “One Sweet Day”, which she recorded with Boyz II Men, holds the longest-running number one song in history – 16 weeks.
- Fairy Godmother
Mariah Carey`s godmother is R&B icon Patti LaBelle. Patti says, that Mariah simply asked her to be her godmother and she agreed. In “The Wendy Williams Show” Patti said: “I love that voice. I mean, you don`t find many voices like that.” She continued: “She sends me four bottles of Cristal and she sends me beautiful white flowers, like 100 or 200 flowers. It’s just beautiful.”
- The almost-collaboration with Courtney Love
Years ago Courtney was searching for someone to sing a line in her song called “Samantha”. While hanging out together at Brett Ratner`s Los Angeles mansion, Mariah volunteered. According to Courtney, Mariah even sang the line right there on the spot, but without a recording device the collaboration never happened.
- Awards, awards, awards…
It`s pretty obvious that Mariah has received awards. But do you know how many?
5 Grammy Awards
21 World Music Awards
10 American Music Awards
32 Billboard Music Awards
… and many, many more.
(She also won 14th Annual Capri Hollywood International Film Festival`s “Best Supporting Actress” award. Pretty talented, isn`t she?)
“If you believe in yourself enough and know what you want, you`re gonna make it happen,” says Mariah.
