THEN&NOW: DEEP FOREST

Nature has music for those who listen. Same goes for French music group “Deep Forest” – in order to feel and understand those ethnic electronica vibes, you need to listen. “Deep Forest” is visiting Latvia very soon – let`s get to know this group!

“Deep Forest” THEN

“Deep Forest`s” story began in early 90s in the North of France when Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet first met. Two musicians were fascinated by ethnic music which they mixed with their own sounds, and so “Deep Forest” was born.

Their first self-titled album, which was nominated for a Grammy, came out in 1992. “Sweet Lullaby” was its hit single and threw musicians on the musical map – UK Top 10 hit. “Sweet Lullaby” was adapted from a traditional song from the Solomon Islands. The album was dance-driven and the samples were heavily edited, so in 1994 Deep Forest was re-released under the name World Mix.

Second album Boheme was released in 1995. Eric and Michel left behind the sounds of the forest and ventured into Easter Europe with tender, yet sad music. The album won Grammy and the band also became World Music Awards Winner for accomplishing the highest world sales as a French group.

From 1996 to 2002 “Deep Forest” released another 4 albums on Sony Music.

“Deep Forest” NOW

In 2005 Michel Sanchez left the band to start his solo career and so Eric Mouquet continued to work alone.

In 2008 “Deep Forest” produced and released Deep Brasil. This album was the launch of Eric`s own label imprint Deep Projects.

Later in 2012 “Deep Forest” collaborated with the legendary Joe Zawinul`s band “Syndicate” on the album “Files under Zawinul”. In 2013 “Deep Forest” released Deep Africa, which included Mouquet`s atmospheric compositions with a spiritual and rhythmic African chanting, percussions and the sounds of nature.

Deep India was released in 2014 and it was an intriguing album. It consisted of eight compositions that captured the rhythms of folk melodies from across the country. In the music you could hear inspiration from ethnic folk songs that are rooted within the regions of Punjab, Rajasthan and other.

At the time “Deep Forest” is officially in charge of the music composition for the huge permanent visual show in Egypt on the prestigious Pyramid site. Show will start in 2016.

“Deep Forest” has also announced a new album, Evo Devo, set for release on June 10.
