MUSIC EVENT: Pažaislis Music Festival Closing Concert, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM, Kaunas

The last highlight of the XXV Pažaislis Music Festival, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Restored Lithuania, will be the opera “Lithuanians” by the Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli. Successful during its premiere at La Scala in Milan in 1874, it was later performed in various other Italian cities, even Buenos Aires and Chicago.

Why did Giuseppe’s Verdi contemporary and Giacomo Puccini’s teacher, A. Ponchielli, create an opera called Lithuanians? It is still the credit of Adam Mickiewicz, whose poem Konrad Valenrod fell into the hands of one of Riccordi’s librettists. Convinced by the beauty of the poem and its suitability for the opera’s libretto, the venerable Casa Riccordi commissioned Antonio Ghislanzoni (known as G. Verdi’s lyricist “Aida”) and A. Ponchielli to write the music. 19th c. the creator of the Italian opera exalted the Lithuanian nation as brave and majestic, for whom the freedom of the homeland is more precious than life.

We believe that the expressive and melodic flow of opera music will be revealed in all colors by exceptional soloists, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Kaunas State Choir, conducted by maestro Modestas Pitrėnas. TICKETS
