An intriguing mix of African music and electronic rhythms, Afrodelic is an up-and-coming project by Victor Diawara. Victor embodies a unique cultural combination: born in Lithuania, raised in Mali, he spent his school years in Germany before permanently moving back to his place of birth in 1997. Having become a household name in Lithuania, Victor is a successful guitarist/producer and runs one of the country’s most important venues – art factory Loftas.
Dreamy melancholy, bright and peaceful yet highly danceable “Weleli“, the second release by Afrodelic, carries the story of loss, crucial life decisions and paying a tribute to one’s roots. Transcending time, place and culture, the music video offers a very personal and emotional glance into Malian daily life.
Weleli is the second single from the upcoming album Dusunkun Hakili (Memory of the Heart), due for release this summer, the story behind it marking the true beginning of the project.
“Weleli has a very special meaning for me. I started working on this song on the weekend I received the news that my father had a stroke, back in 2018. I never got to see him again, but working on the song throughout the night I felt a certain connection with him, as if he was looking over me.
That night in honor of my father I decided to revive this project I had been working on since 2009. I called it Afrodelic.”
Like every song by Afrodelic, Weleli features lyrics by Victor’s father, a well-known Malian writer and poet Gaoussou Diawara. Inspired by civil movements of the 60’s and written in Bambara, the national language of Mali, Gaoussou’s poem still rings true during times of distress.
Faso den anga wili
(Kids of the nation stand up)
Be ka wili ka niogon deme
(Everybody stand up and help each other)
The video features captivating images of raw emotions and unrestrained curiosity of kids playing, dancing or outright performing for a man with a camera who’s capturing their daily lives on the streets of Mali, giving the music an additional dimension of depth.
“Weleli” is available on all major streaming platforms.
Afrodelic has performed in the digital versions of numerous showcase festivals in 2020: Primavera Pro (ES), Liverpool Sound City (UK), Reeperbahn (DE), Music Europe Day (France), Europavox On Air (France), as well as played live in Festivals Kometa (Latvia), Loftas Fest (Lithuania). In 2021 Afrodelic performed in the digital version of Eurosonic 2021 and has been shortlisted in the ETEP Top 12 (European Talent Exchange Programme).
